Mark me down as skeptical about your claim. If I found your statement
credible, I'd happily pay you $200,000 a year to come sit next to me
while I play high limit games. But I don't, so I won't --- although I
enjoy your company and hope to visit in Vegas or Detroit sometime soon.
Back around 1997, I played a lot at Treasure Island. At the time, $5
machines were a real stretch for me --- primarily psychologically but
also somewhat financially. My bankroll was around $200K, far more than
the 3-5 royals philosophy I used as a rule of thumb, but I didn't have
access to decent bankroll calculators (like Dunbar, today) and I wasn't
positive of my level of risk. But with 0.67% cash back, comped RFB to a
nice suite, and a $100,000 giveaway to 400 guests once a month including
a nice awards party which always included a dance floor which made it
extra-special to Shirley and me, it was very attractive. Anyway,
pounding away on $5 Jacks or Better (while simultaneously coaching
Shirley on $2 Jacks on an adjacent machine), we heard this shriek of joy
nearby. A man had hit four deuces on a short-pay $10 DW machine ---
playing one coin. His original hold was 222A, and sure enough he popped
the fourth deuce (For non-DW players, holding the A kicker on this hand
is a terrible play --- costing perhaps $30 in equity, depending on the
exact pay schedule, on a game he only bet $10 to start with). He was
very happy with is $2,000 payoff. The strong players in the room, likely
losing as that's the normal situation between royals, just shook our
heads. What can you say?
