[acvpp] Re: Is There a Fungus Among Us?

Howdy

Not too long ago a woman sat down next to me and proceeded to methodically
wipe down the buttons and surrounding areas of her vp machine with what
appeared to be a disinfecting cloth.

I took notice and said to myself...Self ..that is not a half bad idea. I
have since bought a sanitizing potion and applied it on my last trip. You never
what disease is nesting on your upright.

Do you think I am being paranoiac?

paranoid?

I believe your solution is close enough for Government work.

Hi Grumpy,

I had the same experience last February at the Fiesta Rancho.

After I mentioned it in my subsequent TR, another list member posted
that she and her husband were the couple in my report, who had wiped
down their machine. After humourously chastising me for saying that
they were an "elderly" couple, she explained that this habit had
helped them to ward off upper respiratory infections for some time.

If you'd like to read her message, it's #40480.

Best regards,

I thought, it was the CIA.

But seriously, will the wipes commonly found at the cashiers cages
kill off bacteria ? What about viruses ?

Is there a better alternative for a foreign tourist, who probably will
not be allowed to bring any chemistry on the plane and won't have wheels ?

Out of curiousity, do you do the same thing with door knobs and
handles? I'll bet these see a lot more germ action than a VP machine.
How about Resturant menu's or public phones? Aren't most germs air
based anyway? Your more likely to catch someone on the plane go or
leaving Vegas.

If you are going to bother with VP buttons, why not go the full monty?

Just curious...

Worth considering is Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer. It's an alcohol
that has the consistency of liquid soap. It dries within seconds of
applying it to your hands. I'm considering using it to wipe down the
area before playing a machine and an application to my hands after my
session to ward off what have been inevitable winter colds when
returning home from a casino weekend.

You can find a convenient pocket sized 1 oz. bottle for about a buck.
Larger bottles (4-8 oz. +) that might be used as refills are
available at a fraction of the unit cost.

cdc recommendations against repeat of 1918 influenza:
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/infectioncontrol/resphygiene.htm
    * Cover the nose/mouth when coughing or sneezing;
    * Use tissues to contain respiratory secretions and dispose of
them in the nearest waste receptacle after use;
    * Perform hand hygiene (e.g., hand washing with non-antimicrobial
soap and water, alcohol-based hand rub, or antiseptic handwash) after
having contact with respiratory secretions and contaminated
objects/materials.

I have found that most casino hand wipes are citric acid based and their
germ killing ability is limited. Everyday before leaving to play, I throw a
couple of B & D wipes into my shirt pocket and wipe down the machine buttons
and adjacent areas before we play. These are individual foil packs, about
1-3/4 inches square and the base is 70% isopropyl alcohol. I am not that
knowledgeable on the differences between viral and bacterial germs, and
there is also the consideration of the tenure of said germ on the machine.
I do know that in the 4+ years since we moved here, playing 6-9 hours every
day, we have gotten very few colds. I just figure that an inexpensive wipe
down can't hurt.
