Babe & Nathan;
Historically, I believe Aces and Eights was first released by back in the late1980's by Circus Circus as part of the great era of "payback wars." As Babe states, it SHOULD pay 400 for 4 Aces or 4 Eights.
Why doesn't it then today? Its simple, really. Circus Properties decided to cut the paytable, and on most of those games, the machines were older and actually had the payline written into the ROMs and printed on the glass. They just couldn't delete the payline because of this, but it didn't stop them from just lowering the pay on the Aces and Eights. Some machines I know for certain that this is the case are the $1 Sequential Royal games at Circus Circus in Reno. I'm not positive, but I'd bet the ones in Vegas may be similar.
Butchery, plain and simple.
