Hi Gang:
Since we began playing video poker with a purpose in 1999 I've seen Hedy do
some amazing things at the machines, but I've never seen her do anything like
she did this past weekend at Harrah's AC.
It all began Thursday when we rolled into town about 3 o'clock in the
afternoon. We came in a day early to meet some friends who usually get only
mid-week room offers, but this time, to their amazement, they were able to book a
Thursday AND Friday night. That was a pretty good sign of how Harrah's is
hurting for customers, we figured.
We began playing at the bank of five machines that have 9/6 JOB and 9/6 DDB
and things went very slowly from the beginning. One Benjamin after another
disappeared in the machines and after an hour or two of mental abuse we decided
it might be a good idea to take a break to have dinner with our friends.
After a nice meal in the buffet we returned to the wars and a few quads put some
color back into our faces.
Then, suddenly, it happened!
Playing 50-cent 9/6 DDB, Hedy was dealt the J-10-Q-A of clubs and a
throwaway card. We grasped hands, she hit the draw button and there in the first spot
appeared the most beautiful king of clubs we've ever seen! Yippeee! A
$2,000 royal. And, just like that we had wiped out all our losses ... plus.
I was also playing DDB on the machine to Hedy's right, but at the $1 level.
I had hit aces for $800 a few hands before but I stopped playing when she hit
her royal and was preparing to take our obligatory photo (we have a picture
of all 194 lifetime royals we've hit). While the tech was punching in some
numbers on the keypad of Hedy's machine, I said to her, jokingly, "Here, sit
down at my machine and hit another one!"
She sat down and started to play. I turned away for a second, then heard a
scream and when I looked back I saw a royal flush in hearts on her screen!
Oh, my God! She had this bewildered look on her face and all we could do was
break out in laughter. A $2,000 royal ...and two minutes later a $4,000
royal on the machine next to it!
"It was the second hand I played," Hedy said. "I can't believe it!"
She had held the K-A-10 of hearts and the Q-J came up to complete the royal.
The tech, who was still there working on the first royal, looked stunned
...and, I guess, so did we.
It was the first time we've ever had two machines, side-by-side, locked up
with royals.
We paid off a number of markers we had and soon after called it a night.
The next day we were right back at it, but despite a few nice hits (aces
twice for $400, fours with a kicker twice for $400 each) we found ourselves down
about $1,500 in the early evening after a nice dinner respite in the Seven
Stars Lounge.
We kept plugging away, however, and then about 6:30 I heard a shriek to my
left.
"Another royal!" I heard Hedy say. "Dealt!"
I looked over and, sure enough, there on her screen was a royal flush, again
in hearts, with the word "held" sitting atop all five cards. This one was
another for $2,000 and had come on the same machine on which she hit her first
one in clubs the night before. Three royals for $8,000 in less than 24 hours!
It was her third dealt royal and the second one she's had in three months
after going through a five-year period between dealt ones. Her first, of
course, in 2003, was a doozy ... top line multi-strike for $8,000!
This last score put us in a very good position for the trip and we decided
we would cut short our scheduled three-night stay and take home our profit on
Saturday. Hedy, of course, wasn't finished yet!
We decided to play a little on Saturday morning after breakfast before
hitting the road. I hit aces again for $400 and she hit ducks and a kicker for
$400 but we were still down about $500 when we were winding down around 1 p.m.
Then, Hedy held a lone ace and up popped the other three and a four for a
$1,000 score! We cashed out and ran like thieves!
It turned out to be a 5G weekend for us and continued a nice trend we've had
going for us for the past eight or nine months. Hedy has five royals for the
year (she hit another 2G one two weeks ago) and we are showing a very nice
profit for 2009 after finishing in the black in 2008.
We'll be back at Harrah's this Friday and Saturday, then we fly to Laughlin
on a Harrah's junket out of Newark on March 6. We hope the trend continues.
Regards,
CoachVee & Hedy
