Tom,
I agree that the smokers will never acknowledge the harm they do, on
this board or elsewhere in the broader public forum, and it's
therefore useless to try to debate the concept, "smoking is bad".
My main point was a sense of surprise that of the many card rooms in
Vegas (that are opening presumably in response to public DEMAND), so
many of them are turning to nonsmoking (also presumably in response
to demand). The prevailing wisdom has always been that nonsmoking
ANYTHING never works in Nevada. I consider this a hopeful sign that
the butt, er, worm may have turned.
I think smoking in casinos, while an emotional hot button for some
(particularly those smokers who feel "persecuted") is a central
topic to the VP community, as the presence (or absence) of cigarette
smoke has a direct bearing on our ability to play VP. I, for one,
have been driven away from many good plays by some smoker exercising
his or her "right" to stink up the immediate vicinity, which also
included MY immediate vicinity.
Nonetheless, it might be a topic that too few people are capable of
discussing dispassionately (myself included), so maybe we'd better
stick to safe topics like abortion, gun control, and how them
thievin' Repubblecans stole the last two elections

Tom;
I'm afraid I started this with my example of "casino collusion" (in none of them offering a decent NS area). For that, I sincerely apologize. However, I did win the pool on how long it would be before Silver City was menioned (the very first reply to ROJ, but the exact ime was 5 hrs, 59 minutes).

The more people that speak to management, hosts, focus groups...about
creation of non-smoking areas the more likely it will become reality.
A vocal minority can often achieve their ends.
It would be nice if the members of this forum who write columns or
speak at casino mangement conferences would speak-up on this issue.
I would think Jean Scott after her false scare this past fall would
be particularly sensitive to this issue...spending long hours day
after day in smoke filled casinos is not healthly for your heart or
lungs.

I am and I plan to write about it in FFs one of these weeks. Brad and I try
to not spend more than 2 hours in one day in a smoky casino and we no longer
go to a casino every day - if we need to spend more, i.e., because of a
good promotion, we take lots of breaks to walk outside and breath fresh
air - and we are starting to play more in the mornings when the smoke
doesn't seem so bad. Brad had another heart "episode" and spent several
days in the hospital a couple of weeks ago. It was just an atrial
fibrillation scare but bad enough to have me call an ambulance to take him
to the hospital. They did a full range of cardiac tests and he "passed" all
of them. They adjusted his medication a bit. But the lesson we learned
that night was that we just must not overdo it - we had spent too many hours
in a smoky casino that day having so much fun playing 5-play Multi-Strike
for hours and hours. WE ARE GETTING TOO OLD TO HAVE THAT MUCH FUN IN ONE
DAY!!!!

This is why I think the issue of smoking and its effects are central
to VP. On a related note, I gave up a very profitable semi-career
playing poker in the early 80's ($19,000/year profit) because I
noticed an alarming deterioration in my cardiovascular health. While
I remained active as possible during that period, no exercise
regimen could overcome the dirt in the air that I breathed, day
after day.
If we find that we cannot play VP because we simply can't stand to
be in the casino, then we're unlikely to be very sympathetic to any
ideas of "smoker's rights". But you know what? I wish it wasn't
detrimental to anyone's health at ALL. I would like to see it banned
for the simple reason that it's horribly distracting, annoying, and
obtrusive. I made a $15 mistake at 10/7 DB yesterday because of a
smoke cloud blown across my eyes just as I was pushing the hold
buttons for this hand--33xxx. I wound up drawing four cards to one
of the 3s--discarding the other one (!). I received another 3 on the
draw, and would have made trip 3s if not for the distraction.
Of course the cretin next to me had the "right" to be smoking.
Yeah. "Right" in the kisser. (Had I received TWO threes on the draw,
I would be writing this from the county jail!)
Can you call a floor person to back track the cards when you make a mistake? The VP machine keeps in memory at least the last 30 hands played.

On that note, we really need to have a list here of casinos which
either have non-smoking areas or have very good ventilation. The
non-smokers need to put their money in the right places...
Non-Smoking Areas I Know Of:
All in Laughlin, NV:
Harrah's Laughlin--north casino area is non-smoking.
Riverside--South casino.
The above don't have much playable VP, though.
River Palms--the former arcade area, though this one was still under
construction the last time we were there. The machines they put aside
for the new area seem to include some good VP in nickel and quarter
denominations.
Good Ventilation:
Suncoast
Rampart
Any others?

Exactly how would I "finish" it? Forbid everyone from posting any
further? That ain't my job.
It would seem to me that the subject lines in the posting list
haven't been at all misleading; therefore, if you don't like to read
any more posts on the subject, isn't it pretty easy for you or
anyone else to not do so?
IMHO a thread dies a natural death when no one feels like posting to
it any further; if it continues, it means that some people have more
things to say and by definition it should continue.
If you have anything else you'd rather be discussing, you might
initiate a thread on your own.
please post your article!

There is no "right" to smoke - there never was - when one's actions affect others, especially their health, the action of smoking needs to be avoided. It seems sad that Brad (referring to Jean Scott's Husband) had to have his heart condition aggravated because some cannot control a habit that is very dangerous . For too long we have put up with smoking being allowed as being the norm. People throw cigarette;s everywhere, stub them out in the street (for others to clean up),and assume this is civilized. Revolting! I agree that screaming and name calling isn;t the answer and I fill out the comment cards, etc. I call the casinos ont he day of my arrival to amke sure a non smokign room is blocked and if they renig on this tell the front desk that I will walk (I don'
t bluff) and with one exception they suddenly "find" a non smoking room for me. One time several years ago at the Stardust they put me in a smokign room against my wishes. When I got to the room I called engineering and asked themt oc hange the heatong and air consitioning filters as I didn't want to breathe the smoke I also called housekeeoing to change the bedding and drapes. Within 10" I got a call from the hotel VP telling me that a non smoking room was available.
