A Response To My Letter

Hi,
I just received a phone call from Jim Keane, who is a shift manager
at Mohegan Sun. Frank Neborsky is out of town and Jim received my
letter.
He was very personable and also knowledgeable about Video Poker.
We discussed the business goals of casinos in general and the long
term Math that favors the "house". He was knowledgeable about 9/6
Jacks as opposed to other paytables for this game. And then we
discussed the dollar Gamemakers. After allusions on both our parts
we laughed and referred to the "darling" of our conversation by
name..Pick Em. Here are the cogent points of our conversation.

1. The decision to halve the $ Gamemakers was strictly a business
one.The house hold on these machines was not what they wanted.

2. The initial decision was to do away with all the $ machines .

3. MS looks at the whole machine rather than each individual game(
although they have the capability to do so).

4. Quarter machines tend to give the house a greater % return.

5. Although he did not think they would order any new, or convert any
quarter machines , Mr. Keane did say that they would look into the
possibility of adding a machine or two from storage.

6. MS is proud of their 9/6 Jacks inventory( to which I concurred),
and the fact that Foxwoods doesn't offer 9/6.

In conclusion I did mention that if all the Sun offered was 9/6
Jacks( and I'm not belittling that), then Atlantic City becomes a
viable alternative because they offer 9/6 Jacks and in addition give
cashback. I also mentioned (to his surprise), that there was only
one,$Pick Em with a good paytable in all of Atlantic City.
By the way in my original letter to Mr. Neborsky I did include my
card number so that he could see that I was a steady customer and not
someone who just happened to wander in one day. And in fact Mr. Keane
told me that he did look up my play. Mr. Keane said that if I knew
of other VP players with the same view , THEY SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED
TO WRITE as there definitely is strength in numbers.

I guess the $5 and higher PE must get enough bad play and short coin
to keep them happy. I also believe that some pros who play 2
machines at the same time of the higher limit PE make mistakes.
Mistakes are huge in PE.

I don't think the shift manager sees the big picture. You keep full
pay machines as a loss leader. No one likes to gamble alone. In the
high limit room if I'm a slot customer and see an empty area I leave
thinking that the machines are cold. If a couple of people are
playing the high limit PE it draws me in and maybe I dump alot of
money playing $25 slot machines.

As much money as Mohegan Sun makes on slots having full pay PE means
nothing. That being said if their slot manager is sweating a couple
of $1 PE then all that might be left of any denomination in the
entire casino one day will only be quarters.

As you see the way machines come and go through casinos, it's a
constant case of test-marketing. They never really know how much
difference a machine makes unless they experiment. Since the $1 PE's
were reduced from 16 to 8 they will probably find their house-hold
reduced since us avid $1 PE players will now more greatly dominate
their use over those who casually play any other game on those
GameMakers. I do like the way personnel tends to be straight up
front with players. I do think its very important to write letters
such as this because management will find out what actions really
matter to their customers. Many, who don't know better, will not
care and do nothing. I would not write a copycat letter but I would
emphasize how MS's offering keeps us there over Foxwoods. I think
having our bodies there, even at no $ gain is beneficial to them,
since we help promote the casino to our friends, and help make the
place popular. Come late night/early morning, Foxwoods, (even with
fewer VP offerings), business is booming while MS looks dead.
