It was a max 5 coin machine and he had all 5 quarters in for the payout of 6000 coins, $1500.

We were at the River Palms in Laughlin. A lady hit the Royal on
Pick-A-Pair for the 10000 coins, $2500. While she was waiting for the
W2, the machine was playing the jackpot song. Another lady walked by
and saw the jackpot. She seemed clueless so the first lady explained
how Pick-A-Pair works. So she sits down at the next machine and
proceeds to play. Within 5 or 6 hands she gets a straight flush for
1000 coins, $250. Her husband arrived soon so she left with most of her
winnings.
