A question for Bob Dancer

You mentioned in a post not long back that Bonus Poker 8/5 is not the same
strategy as Jacks 9/6. I do BP 8/5 on one of my plays and would like to know
any moderate errors (differences) I should look for and what error settings to
practice WinPoker on.
Thanks,
JT

JT asked me to explain the differences in strategy between 9/6 Jacks and
8/5 Bonus.

The answer to your request is involved. It strikes me as good subject
matter for my Tuesday column at casinogaming.com. So I'll prepare it for
there and you'll see my answer over one or two columns before the end of
the year.

If any of the rest of you play both games, you might want to address
this question for yourself. This is an excellent example of the type of
question that the strongest players know and others don't. And for those
of you who aspire to be a stronger player (which includes JT, I think),
this is a relatively easy and straightforward question for you to
grapple with. I believe that if you do the study necessary to write out
a complete answer, your knowledge of one or both games will improve and
you'll make fewer errors in the future.

I'm surprised that Bob doesn't want to post the answer to this
question, but I bet many in this group can easily handle the
question. I'm not an expert on this question, nor do I play one on
TV, but I'll try to get the ball rolling.

Differences between 9/6JOB and Bonus 8/5: pays for quad aces; 2,3,4s;
flush; fullhouse.

Hold fullhouse over AAA; 222 ;333 ; 444
Hold AAXX over AA
Hold XXYY over XX

As far as I can see that takes care of any quad or fullhouse
differences that could arise.

Most differences are due to the flush pay differnces and affect
straight flush ordering.

In 8/5 Bonus:

AKQJ beats QJs

KQJ and QJ beats 3 STFL 2 gaps 1Hi

JTs; KQ; KJ beats 3 STFL 1 Gap 0 Hi

AK; AQ; AJ beats QTs

i can't help but think you are answering the wrong question.

Hold fullhouse over AAA; 222 ;333 ; 444
Hold AAXX over AA
Hold XXYY over XX

none of these decisions differ between 9/6JOB and 8/5BONUS.

perhaps i'm missing something.

Well, I realize the the subject is not "a question for Skip Hughes", but I'll jump in here anyway. First of all the overall loss of EV in using JB for 8/5 Bonus is .003%, not enough to complicate your life for, if you are a recreational player, IMO.
But the poster was right about the fact the decreased flush value accounts for the differences. Note that this is not an excercise I would normally engage in as FVP will generate a pen-free strategy for either game.
These changes make up all but .0006% of the difference:
Hold JQK or JQ (unsuited) over an inside (no HC) or dbl inside (1HC) SF3.
Hold AQ, KQ (unsuited) over QTs and KJ (unsuited) over JTs

Those are pretty easy tweaks to remember and they result in a pen-freee EV of 99.1637% compared to 99.1643% (pen-free). I lost interest at this point. At least it was free. <g>

Yes, you are missing something...

The differences between 9/6JOB and 8/5 bonus would be due to the
following:

1. increase for quad Aces
2. increase for quad 2,3,4s
3. decrease in fullhouse
4. decrease in flush

The above part of my post shows no changes due 1, 2,or 3

The second part of the post, not shown in your reply, shows changes
due to flush decrease. Skip uses slightly different nomenclature Do
you understand now? Now you don't have to wait for "Bob's" drawn out
article(s).
