A Progressive Tale

In a nearby town was a small casino with a seldom played $5
progressive video poker machine. The
machine had a .5% meter and the best paying games were 98.9% deuces and 98%
bonus poker. In the past two years the jackpot had hit only twice, both times
for less than $28,000.

It was a bright and sunny day this spring when the jackpot again
reached $25,000 and the machine became a good play for me combining the
progressive jackpot with earned cashback, weekly freeplay and multiplier days. I began playing a limited amount once a
week.

By July the jackpot was up to $30,000. It was time to take
my machine more seriously including adjusting my play into royal mode. My losses, while manageable, began reaching
into the many thousands.

By mid September, when the jackpot reached $35,000, it was
the time to strike. Playing $40,000 to $60,000
several times a week I knew the jackpot would soon be mine. Losses
were often $2000 to $3000 and more a day.
Then a respite, six trips with a total loss of 0.

In October, for the first time this year, there were 3 days when
someone else was playing my machine when I arrived. To combat this I started playing bonus poker
half of each day to increase my chance of getting a royal from once every 38,000
plays for deuces to once every 33,000 plays.
It wasn’t lost on me that the variances of both games had moved from the
20’s to over 60.

Having played well over $1,000,000 and with losses in excess
of $40,000, I wasn’t about to give up. In
late October the jackpot had reached $39,500. On Tuesday I played just $60,000
and was hit hard with a loss for the day of $7000. After a two day recovery I was back Friday
morning. The jackpot was now $20,004.

It was a dark and stormy night.

Ouch! Hopefully there’s something else you can focus on today, but I can imagine how hard it would be to get that aggravation out of your mind.

Chasing royals can be hard work. With a 0.5% meter a double royal should represent about 4 cycles. If you had enough incentives along with the meter to make the 15/9 NSU a breakeven play, and you played min-cost-per-royal strategy, the average cost per royal, or per cycle, would be $20,000. Looks like you ran bad (worse than average) with your $40,000+ loss, but then you said you played some of a lesser game and you probably weren’t playing min-cost-per-royal strategy. Still though, it seems wise to know a bit of the game before you go into it, there’s about a 0.5% chance of playing off 5 cycles without hitting a royal, in which case the “average” cost would be about $100,000 min. Also, if you don’t already have a copy, Frank’s book on “Secret World of Video Poker” would be a cheap (in comparison) guide, it includes a recipe for pepper chicken which is consoling. Frank had a money man who would take the hit on a bad beat, so presumably Frank has a more cherry disposition on chasing video poker progressives.

Bill…Sad, but happens.

On a smaller note, Stardust progressive quarter. I barely remember. I was there for the last week they operated. This story happened years before closure. Anyhow, a .25 prog I started playing about $2500 . Played till early morning. Gave up. Next day visited all over town, but never stopped Dust. I based out of Frontier and strolled down to Stardust next morning. The prog was still on . It had to be $3800 or more when I spotted it . Hard to get seat, but got one and never hit after lot of play. I heard it went off a day or 2 later. Don’t know what it went off at. Also, I remember Frontier 6 coin quarter progressive going to 14- $15,000 one time. I remember sitting at that bank and hitting $6,043 with my first roll quarters.

On the other hand, my personal record, 7 Royals in 24 hours. Played at bar Stardust. All but one of 7 Royals on $1, 3 play at edge of bar (by Keno) . Royals were made easier, time wise, when ,2 times, I was dealt 4-ROY and catching 2 Royals on 2- 4Roys . So that was 4 of them. (Crazy, same machine about 20 minutes apart) Caught 2 more single royals and hit the hay. Staying at Dust. Next morning early, went over to LVH. Playing 10 play quarter, 9/6 JOB and got one Royal. All within 24 hrs . Not real spectacular since playing 3 play $1 & 10 play .25. But, I liked that day.

Luck is fickle…Rule # 1…

Cheers…Jeep
