So long as casinos are busy they have very little reason to give full
pay except to entice SOME people who might not otherwise show up to
come to their casino. In the late 90's there was less FP VP on the
strip then there was post dot com bust and 9/11. After those 2 events
when tourism was sinking like a rock there was A LOT of FP VP on the
strip. Here we are 6 years later and it's worse then ever. Why? IMHO:
***The Strip***
1) The casino is no longer the major draw of the mega resort you have
nightclubs, shows, bars, salons ($50+ for a haircut but thatâs another
gripe) The casino manger has to show a profit, the slot/VP manager has
to show a profit to the casino manager.
2) There is so much to do that a casual player will unfortunately play
a worse pay table because in the 4 day gambling vacation who wants to
waste 45 minutes finding a better one.
3) With Vegas being so popular who cares. If they don't get you as a
customer they will get the next person.
***Downtown***
1) See #3 above and #2 not so much as it's not 45 minutes to get to
the next place but still.
2) Downtown is getting older. Some of the costs of keeping the older
buildings going is starting to climb. Money has to be made up someplace.
3) More and more "Joe Sixpack" coming and not knowing / caring.
***"Locals Places"***
1) Sorry to say this folks but last time I was in a locals place the
9/6 JOB , 8/5 BP, LD and others were empty as people were pouring $$$
into slots.
2) Gas is up, food is up, life is getting more expensive. People might
have a smaller gambling budget. If a 9/6 JOB that made $100 profit
last month only made $85 this month, cut the payback to 8/6 and see if
that makes up the difference.
3) With more and more people coming in there are less and less
educated gamblers. They don't know / care and will pay 6/5 JOB.
***Elsewhere***
1) If the nearby Indian casino is the only place that does not involve
a 4 hour plane ride or a 6 hour car drive and it only had 7/5 and you
just want to play for fun you play it. The 8/5 you see as the Mirage
does not look so bad once you do get there.
2) Sometimes if you are not on a gambling trip, and you are just
playing for fun or to kill time you play what is there.
*I* was guilty of this Friday at Harrahâs Chester in PA. I had to be
at the Boeing facility next door, and was NOT going to drive back to
New York with the Friday traffic.
The $100 I put into the really short pay .10c deuces machine sent the
wrong message to Harrahâs; in that people will play anything. On the
other hand it saved my sanity and took a lot of time off my trip back.
(Both of us left the plant at 4:00 I went to gamble my partner went
home. I left the casino at 6:30 and pulled into our office in NY 15
minutes behind him.) So $100 and some fun time or an extra 2:15
minutes in traffic (almost 2x the drive time).
3) With casinos everywhere now people are used to seeing short pay due
to the lack of local competition. Seeing it in Vegas does not bother
them.
4) With more casinos everywhere see #1 in my view of why strip
conditions have deteriorated.

Id like nothing more than to be wrong about my projection of the
extinction of positive VP. I guess time will tell.
