A.C. Revenues Plummet & "the Donald" says "I told you so!"

Article from today's "Press of Atlantic City"

It's not the smoking ban or Pennsylvania casinos that are hurting Atlantic
City. The older casinos in Atlantic City are hurting because the owners
haven't reinvested in them. They just take the profits and think customers will
keep coming no matter what.

The Borgata and Harrah's in Atlantic city are giving the customers what they
want and their revenues are up.

Whether it's St. Louis, Biloxi, Lake Charles, Chicago or Las Vegas, the
newest, best kept up and best run casinos get the business and the others
languish and make excuses.

Sorry, I beg to differ! No matter what anyone says, the smoking bans to
hurt. You can see this every day at Harrah's in Joliet. They are losing so
much money, even the seven stars aren't going very much.

As a non-smoker I can tell you that the smoking ban has INCREASED my frequency of play by a fairly significant amount. My wife wouldn't go to a casino at all unless we took a trip to Vegas due to the smoke, even though she enjoys playing very much. Now we go fairly regularly. I was a diamond 3 years ago, but hadn't been close the past 2 years because of my wife's refusal to go due to the smoke. This year, we'll both hit diamond easily.

Revenues of the LVStrip casinos were down a record amount Jun 2007 to
Jun 2008. I believe the number was about 17% which was the largest
decrease in biz since this data started being compiled in 1984.

Should we blame this decrease in biz on a smoking ban or should we
blame it on $4/gallon gas and the resulting crunch it's put on the
budgets of households throughout America?

I agree.
I also play live poker, and here in California those rooms are full even though smoking is not allowed in them. The smokers either sit there with an unlit cigarette in their mouth, or go outside to smoke when the urge strikes them.

My opinon is the ecomomy is hurting boats more than smoking ban. If you compare the numbers that are available on the Illinois Gaming Board site with the Mississippi Gaming Board, you will find Mississippi is also hurting.. And they are still smoking!

The factor in both cases is added room capacity. I have no doubt that
wagers per guest night are down.

Wouldn't have anything to do with economy would it?
