What are the odds against being dealt a royal flush in JOB (I guess
the odds would be the same in any game that uses a 52-card deck)?

I guess I've been extremely lucky! In my VP-playing career I've hit 4
royals in about 130,000 hands.
When I lived near Vegas back in the mid-90's I hit 2 royals in about
100,000 hands - 1 of which was dealt to me. I was mainly playing
Loose Deuces back then at the Hilton.
In the last 6 months I've hit 2 royals in just a tad over 30,000
hands - 1 of which was dealt to me (this past Saturday night). All of
this play has been on a casino boat here in Florida, playing quarter
9/6 JOB.
So, 2 dealt royals in about 130,000 hands is obviously a very lucky
outcome. Makes me wish they'll put 100-plays on the boat.

There are 52!/(5!*47!) ways to pick a 5-card hand out of 52 cards.
Thats (52*51*50*49*48)/(5*4*3*2*1), or 2,598,960.
Since exactly four of those hands would be royal flushes, the
probability of being dealt a royal on any given hand would be
4/2,598,960, or 1 in 649,740. Obviously it's a rare event, but it's
conceivable you could see one (or more) in your lifetime. It's far
more likely than hitting MegaBucks!
Interestingly enough, my first ever WinPoker royal was a dealt
royal. I look forward to my first REAL royal, dealt or not!

Saturday night I was on the boat with my lady. She's never seen a
royal though she saw the 10 $100 bills I brough home last September!
When the slot people came over to verify my jackpot Saturday, I asked
one if she could page my lady and have her come to my machine. She
seemed reluctant so I told her there was five bucks in it for her if
she would. She had my lady paged, and I gave her the five bucks.
Other than that, I haven't tipped since my first royal. Why should I?
It's not like a waitress in a restaurant or a valet parking my car.
I'm not asking them to provide a service to me. The casino leaves me
no choice but to require their services when I hit a royal. If the
casino had the new all-ticket machines, there would be nobody to tip.

Personally, I play it by ear. If it takes forever to get paid, no tip. If I have one of those change people just hanging around with a cart... congratulating me every 5 minutes and obviously trying to set me up for a toke, they get nothing.
My last RF, last month, a friendly change person who'd been nice for two days of my trip when I DIDN'T have a hand pay pending, he rushed over when he saw the lights flashing. I was in a remote part of the casino [often ignored for long periods of time]. He wheeled his cart to find an attendant, was back in less than two minutes. The attendant had the cash, paid me and was leaving and not "waiting" for a tip. I hadn't tipped my last three RF's for other reasons, I gave them $10 each and thanked them for the prompt service. Like someone else mentioned, I had called my wife, resting in the room since it was 2am, to come see it. The attendant had already graciously agreed to wait 5 minutes before "forcing" me to play off the RF.
When I get extra courtesy, I tip. If they are rude, or in many cases touting me for a tip... they get a "thank you." <g>

I got my first Royal on the 0.25 FPDW progressives at the Silver
Legacy in Reno last Dec. The cashier lady who hand-paid me must have
known it was my first time, because she had to tell me how to receive
the stack of bills: "Hold out your hand, honey!"
I tipped her $10 and the suddenly-anxious-to-serve-me waitress
another $10.
I still tip the attendant something on the hand-pays, but not the
suddenly hovering wait-staff. Makes for good juju I believe. I think
if it's been less than 45000 hands since your last Royal, it
shouldn't hurt your bankroll to tip SOMETHING on a jackpot.
