Back when I hit my first royal several years ago I was still a BJ card
counter. I had only played quarter & nickel VP on a few occasions in the
past for something to do. I had just bought Stanford Wong's Professional
Video Poker book because I had heard there was something to this VP thing
and a person could have an advantage. It was after midnight and I had
lost my BJ bankroll for the day with the exception of $100. I was at the
Golden Nugget Las Vegas and decided to play my $100 thru a $5 9/6/4000 JB
in the old high limits area which was then located against the front wall
of the casino. Almost immediately I hit a quad and out came the coins.
In the matter of an hour I hit a couple more quads requiring a couple of
hopper fills. I had made a copy of the strategy chart from the book
which I referred to frequently. (At the time I didn't realize the chart
was for 8/5 progressives which didn't work well for the game I was
playing.) All of a sudden out of the blue I hit a RF. Maybe the incorrect
aggressive progressive strategy had helped me get the RF I don't remember
then hand. I was so nieve at the time that I didn't at first realize why
the light had gone off on the machine--I thought it was out of coins
again. Then when I realized it was a RF I did not even realize what a RF
paid on a $5 machine--doing the quick math I thought it was $2000. I had
no idea what an appropriate tip was because I had never played slots or
had a jackpot before. I remember asking the attendants if I could give
then coins as that is what I was used to doing in BJ. I remember my coin
tray was full and I gave them handfuls of $5 tokens. How dumb they must
have thought I was!
Anyway a couple BJ barrings later I decided VP was the way to go. Wisely
(?) I studied up on the game and dropped back in denomination when I
realized what a rare occurrence a RF is. I occasionally dabbled in $5 VP
but it wasn't until last year that I hit another $20K royal--actually
three of them!
If you could win all the time it wouldn't be gambling, it would only be a
job.
