These particular machines are IGTs Gamemakers. We have
seen Royals hit on the $2 level twice on them this
week. I almost believe the other play on the machine
(other denominations, other games, like keno), are
adding to the progressive. Maybe tonight , after all
have gone to bed (yeah, right) I'll get to experiment
a little with it. Oh, plus there is $10 cashback for
every $1000 played!

There are other manufactuers machines on board, but
they even look cheap and evil.

AHA!!!!!!!! The short coin effect!!!!!! Mark, the short coin effect didn't
cross my mind when I read your original post. The short coin effect can
be huge in spots and I think you found one. Short coiners contribute to
the meter or meters but do not qualify for the extra pay when they make
the hand simply because they are short coining. I made a post not long
ago about the short coin effect on meters at the 4 Queens. My
conclusion was there are far, far more short coiners in the VP world
than I ever imagined.

With this inew information in hand a plausible scemaro is the royal
meter is very strong, like 2% or 3%, maybe stronger, but most of the
action on the bank is short coin, driving up the meter. More than likely,
this is what is going on. Meter strength magnifies the short coin effect.
I've seen royal meters as high as 5%. Harveys at the Lake used to have
a 10's or better bad pay (like 90%) game for quarters that had a 5%
royal meter. They also had the same game in a BIG Bertha for dollars
with a 5% meter. It got locked up when it got high enough.

Now, just as sure as the sun comes up, some big bankrolled hustler is
making plans to take the cruise and look for and payoff an employee to
keep him posted on the royal amount. He'll plan on bringing a team.
And just as sure as the sun comes up he's gonna find out someone else
is already doing it. BTW, it's a wide open royal draw, Mark. Good luck.

It is now at about $11,200. My observation is that of
the eight machines hooked up to it, only 3 at any one

won a slot tourney on board earlier this week, so I
have unexpected $$$ to chase the impossible dream.
Cozumel was great today (did I mention the cruise was
free, too? Won it in Harrahs Ak-chin),

And I am proud to say it was me that brought it down
at $11,286.75!

Holding three to the royal, it was also a sequential,
but no extra for that!

The meter reset at $2000. There were 6 of us playing
full coin at the time.

My wife is VERY happy for us! A picture was taken,
I'll forward it to the admin when I get back home and
scan it in,

Mark

Mark, I forgot to ask if you could time the meter if you get the chance and
lets us know. If one dolar in action flips it 1 Cent it's a 1% meter, 2 cents
is a 2% meter, etc. Thanks.

The Palms is filled with posters highlighting their Mother's Day
menu: Halibut garnished with "fried leaks". Sounds kind of messy.

winnings whether he was in international waters, US waters, or any

Ouch! I didn't realize that the IRS reached so far and wide. I guess being a Canadian, I'm
used to ALL gambling winnings being tax-free except when I gave to pay witholding tax
when I'm on US soil and which I get back when I file the following year. Still a very nice win
though!

Maybe you should try it anyway. You know...just for the Halibut.

Am I mistaken? ...

I'm vaguely aware of non-resident tax filing and thought that you were
subject to the same tax liability potential on US slot wins as US
citizens -- to receive a full refund of the taxes withheld on our US
slot win, you'd have to claim a loss deduction when filing a 1040NR
that fully offsets your reported win.

In other words, you're subject to the same tax exposure (roughly
speaking) on your win as our cruise patron -- the key difference is
that the winner in the cruise casino wasn't subject to withholding on
the win.

- H.

No you are correct. Under the Canada-U.S. Income Tax Convention, I can claim my U.S.
gambling losses up to the amount of my U.S. gambling winnings for the yearby filing a U.S.
Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return.

Just curious, as a Canadian who will be filing their first U.S. tax
return next year, do winnings equate to the total of the W2Gs and
losses equate to net loss outside of the W2Gs? Or do winnings equate
to coin-in plus net winnings and losses equate to simply coin-in. For
example if I did 100K coin-in and finished the year down 2K with one
4K royal, do I put my winnings down as 4K and losses down as 6K or do
I claim my winnings as 98K and losses as 100K?

You will be better off putting down the smaller total. Your loss deduction
is limited to your win total.

FYI,
I was issued a W2-G at the end of the cruise.
My wife says most cruise ship casinos are operated by
a US entity.

On another topic, the casino was willing to cash my
Simon gift cards ( I had three). I don't know if there
was a limit. The pursers office would not accept them
for portfolio payments. The gift shops did accept
them.

Here is a link to the IRS that explain the tax treaty with Canada:

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/international/article/0,,id=106252,00.html

I would put down the 6k loss and the 4k win.
