6 coin - Ah the good old days at "Old" Frontier.

Hi all

I was staying at Frontier when they went on strike and played there
every month or two for many years. Frontier was my home base and my
trips were usually Fri thru second Sunday. I played all over town but
I always watched the 6 coiner. What kept me in business was the SF
meter. At that time meters went fast. Sure players lurked for the
4kd. But at that time 4kd reset to $32.00 if my memory is right. You
had to put up with the team or advantage players. But that's the name
of the game in Progressives. Anyhow, I would watch the SF meter and
when it got around $900 one could notice the locals drift in. I think
a 4G royal was break point for advantage bunch. Since I based at
Frontier I would watch and secure 2 seats before all seats filled
up. I hit one $6000 and one $7500 royal and a few smaller royals. I
got many SF hits. Sometime in a trip the royal or sf was never
playable. Sometime meter ran to playable a couple times or more. It
was fun but you needed a good bankroll or you were toast. The last
few times I have been to Frontier there was nothing playable. I only
get to Vegas once or twice a year.

I liked Frontier because they also had fullpay deuces. 2 at a $1, 4
or 5 at .50 and a bunch of .25. As time went by they axed the $1
first and .50 second. Then the new guys took over and they are all
gone. There was also a few other good vp progs and 9/6 JOB with 7s
double. In those days people even liked the slots. Most thought they
paid better than most other joints.

Alas those days are gone. I may stay there for a coupon that I can
only cash if I get a room. The offers in other places are as good and
even if they are a little less the nicer rooms make up for the
difference. Frontier used to be a nice place. Howard Hughes would
have tears in his eyes if he knew.

There are more customers now, but the customers are not players. I
have seen the whole bar loaded with people and not one coin being
played.

We comment that we go there to play tennis or golf. No chance of ever
hitting anyone with the ball.

The six coiner starts at $2500 for the royal, $250 for SF and $100 for
the quad.
Used to have 14c of the final quarter going to the meter and I have
hit the quad for $290, the SF for $2400 and the royal for $9200. But
that was years ago.
The royal still gets up as high as $5000 (on rare occasion) the SF,
maybe up to $340 and the quad $108 or so. Much slower progression
rate.
Break even is around $3333.
Input the numbers to Frugal or Winpoker and then take the EV, divide
by 6 and multiply by 5 to get the correct amount.
VPstrategy will give you proper play.

Hi Elliott

One time I was playing for SF. It was somewhere in signer land. I'm
not sure but about 1400. Tables were packed and everyone was playing.
No waiting for 4kd to build. I drew a 4SF and, as always, I drew fast
and caught SF. Sat back and relaxed. The guy on game across from me
started raising a minor fuss. "Hey what happened?" He protested. Then
he realized, I beat him out by seconds. He hit the reset meter. Which
brings me to a point. When playing progressives don't sit and look
over a 4 royal asking your wife or friend to watch this draw. You
might be beat out by a second. Of course this wasn't the case on the
beat out with my SF. The guy who got reset meter was regular player.
Agaain, the good old days.

There is a "regular" player in Las Vegas called "The Stallion" He was
dealt 4 to the royal on a $1 progressive OVER $15,000. As is his
habit, he shouted "Look what I have" as he got up and circled his
chair, etc He drew the right card and was then paid $4002 as someone
else beat him to it.
This can happen without the spectacle. My wife was once paid $4001
and she did NOT dance, shout and carry on.

More cautionary and disturbing than the loss of the progressive in this tale is the fact that a man went by the handle, "The Stallion." :wink:

Gee, Elliott, if I missed a big royal becaused I paused to goof
around I might dance over to the nearest bridge. Better, since there
not many high bridges in Vegas, I might have to dance down to the big
dam and jump off. That might not work either. Since 9/11 there may be
enough security to stop me from jumping. Well, I guess the best thing
is to play'em fast when I get the 4Roy on a prog.

Rocky Balboa?? Heh, heh -- I grew up in that old neighborhood of the Rocky films (Kensington, Philadelphia), and used to go to that pet store all the time when I was a school child. Went to St. Anne's [Catholic School] (printed on the back of the jacket on one of the kid's that runs with Rocky in one of his movies.

I'll bet the "Stallion" felt like an "Ass" (donkey) when his dance cost him the progressive. :wink: I guess that's what you get when you try to 'rub it in' a bit.
