4 to a royal scare

Years ago I spoke with a pro who was in our town playing a progressive and I
noticed he made a notation in a note book from time to time when he had a
"scare." He told me it was his way to keep track of hands played and that you got
one scare for every 430 or so hands. He defined a scare as a hand where the
last card dealt left to right could have given you the royal but did not do so.
Any body familiar with this concept?

Yup, that's the way I've always thought of a scare. Can't remember
where the definition came from. Maybe a book by Fromm, or Paymar?

A friend of mine claims that a friend of his invented the term. I've
always thought of a scare as a draw that makes 4 to the royal with an
unseen card still left, the cycle of which is about double 430. It's
not nearly as "scary" if the last card that will be seen can't make a
royal.
