Art "5-card" Harris
Steve Jacobs

The 2008 Hall of Fame election will be conducted between 28
September and 11 October. A nominee who receives more than half
of the votes cast will be the 2008 Hall of Fame Inductee. If no
nominee receives more than half the votes, there won't be an
inductee this year.

Between now and 28 September, additional nominees can be
suggested by vpFREE members (along with their qualifications),
and the merits of anyone's favorite can be expounded and
discussed. Any suggested nominee(s) who receive majority approval
from the Administrative Committee will be added to the list of
nominees.

Is this the best way to do this?

I realize I'm fairly new around here but that's never kept me from
opening my big mouth. If I get to taste my own toes it won't be the
first time

From the standpoint of sampling and statistics this appears to be a
sub-optimal way to select an inductee. It seems to me that quite a
few years might pass without anyone being admitted to the HOF. If
that's the goal I suppose it's more understandable, but still runs
the risk of failing to select a deserving person.

This process will be very sensitive to the size of the pool, and the
prominence and popularity (relative strength) of all the nominees.

To illustrate this let me pose a hypothetical; what if the following
sample of HOF members were not members, but instead were in this
year's pool (and in subsequent years as well).

Bob Dancer
Lenny Frome
Skip Hughes
Dan Paymar
Jean Scott
Michael Shackleford
Dean Zamzow

Would anyone be inducted this year? Would it be one of the current
members? How many of the current members would eventually "make it"
and how many would we fail to honor?

Just a bunch of things to think about. I'll go vote now.

I believe many HOFs require and inductee to get a certain minimum of
votes, not the one who gets the most votes.

I think this is an attempt to duplicate that concept.

In that sense I agree with the concept.

Now should it be 50% or 70% or what is subject to debate, but I for
one would vote for a fairly high percentage.

It is not mandatory that a certain number of inductees be included in
other HOFs and I think this parallels that.
