$20.00 tip at check in

I have had pretty good luck (but not alsways)in recieving room
upgrades over the years by giving the check in person a $20.00 tip
when I check in to the hotel. I am staying a 3 nights at the LV Hilton
for the 1st time this fall on a 3 night deluxe room offer, but I have
never tried tipping when combined with a room offer. Does anyone have
any experience doing this, or know how much lattitiude the folks in
the VIP check-in have? I have heard not to give a host a cash
gratuity, but I don't think that's who I will deal with at the check
in.
I appreciate any comments or experiences you can share,

I stayed at LVH on a room offer in April (Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday night) and used the $20.00 tip. The check in clerk asked
what I wanted, and I said, "I place myself in your hands. I recieved
what I call the "Austin Powers" room, 2769. It had the round bed,
mirrors on the ceiling, and the bathroom had a tub molded with what
only can be discribed as leg rests.

LOL. Is that worth $20? I think that I would pay $20 extra NOT to
have a room like that.

(Just kidding)

My wife and I got a room like that (with the round bed on a platform,
mirrors on ceiling, jacuzzi, "special" showers, etc.) the very first
time we went to Caesar's in LV, about 5-6 years ago. It must have
been slow at the time and the check-in clerk must have been in a
playful mood, having asked us if we were "newlyweds". It was
embarrassing to show our sons our room. They were with us on that
trip, but in another room.

Yes, we are old "stick-in-the-muds". <smile>

I'm staying at Mandalay Bay soon, would $20 even make them blink, or
would they just snicker under their breath at me? Plus I'm already
signed up for a suite.....
