The problem occurs when html links are split into two or more lines. This occurs when a user's computer is set to do that, or perhaps when a hosting service for something like Yahoo or Hotmail does it. Unfortunately, there are still many users out there who can't figure out why the link isn't working, and they don't know to copy and paste the remnants from the second line into their browser.
As a good rule of thumb, I use TinyUrl for any link that is longer than perhaps 40 characters. Essentially, I just eyeball the link, and if it looks longer than about half the length of lines in my post, I 'tinyurl' it. Like I said in another post, I use it so much that I have the link right on my tool-bar.
