Shirley won twice, sort of. We were both sitting there with some
friends and didn't win in the first 15 minutes. Shirley decided to go
chat with some other friends who were seated 100 feet away. I saw her
number on the screen and hollered out 'SHIRLEY!' She heard me and went
up to get her prize.
When she got up there and turned in her card, the lady running
it told her that her number wasn't up there. Shirley said something
like, "That's impossible! My husband is Bob Dancer and he says my number
was called." The response was, "I don't care if you're married to the
President of the United States. We didn't call your number."
Turns out I was a LITTLE bit mistaken. Shirley's number is 68739
and the actual number posted was 68679. It looked the same to me for a
second. By the time I realized I was mistaken, Shirley was already up
there being embarrassed. She came back and gave me a look like a mother
who'd just discovered her child had done something REALLY bad. I didn't
know what my "punishment" would be, but I knew that I'd have to pay the
piper sooner or later.
Five minutes later, Shirley's real number was called, and I
called out "SHIRLEY!" one more time. When she went up there the lady
said, "I suppose your husband said your number was called again?"
Shirley nodded sheepishly, but was able to collect her money. I suspect
my "punishment" just got diminished when she actually did win.
