This is a game, where previous to the changes, you had to wait in
line for a seat. Now there is next to no one playing. Game choice
is 10/7 DB, a 100% plus game. Skill level the same for the old and
the new machines.
Maybe everyone is just having the same extended bad luck at the same
time. Or is it something else?

It is something else. The evolution of 4Q and downtown.

In the coin clunker days, cashback was earned at $5 point, now it is $8. I
am sure that made some people reconsider the play. For awhile there wasn't
much else to play in the 4Q but the 10/7 DB. Now there are several other nickel
to dollar plays to occupy the population of educated players. Even all the
bartops can be a play at the quarter level. The 4Q is now 100% TITO.

Personally, I have gone thirsty over the years playing that bank of 10/7 with
non-existant cocktail service. Being in tourist mode twice in the past year
I found a better play and people watching view on the quarter progressive
bartops, with attentive drink service at the bars on my visits. So I wasn't
taking up a seat at the 10/7 DB progressive, staring at the back wall with all that
foot traffic behind me. I am sure there are others like me who have
abandoned that particular play.
