1 million hands at one game
Hi,
If you have WinPoker or Frugal Video Poker, you can do simulations.
The computer plays a lot of hands by itself fast. I just did five
simulations in Frugal of 9/6 Jacks or Better, a million hands each.
The software stores the results -you can later erase them- with all
sorts of statistics. Here are some numbers from the five Frugal
simulations I ran, all of them played with perfect strategy.
Number of credits at the end of the million hands (Starting with zero
credits): -26,395; -7,010; +4,490; -38,575; -2,305.
Payback percentage at the end of a million hands: 99.47%, 99.86%,
100.09%, 99.23%, 99.95%.
Number of Royals obtained in each of the one million hands
simulation: 25, 32, 33, 22, 30.
The predictions you can make about video poker machines are of a
statistical nature. The numbers above agree with the paytable of 9/6
Jacks or Better, and with a random shuffled deck.
The more millions of hands you play, the closer you will come to the
predicted payback of 99.54% and the Royal cycle of 40,390 hands
between each Royal.
In Frugal you also get charts and there you can see the number of
credits you have as a function of hands played. From observing those,
I can tell you it is quite common to go 100,000 hands without a
Royal; but also, clusters of two or more Royal hits close by are not
ucommon. I have experienced this in my JB play. I have gone a year
without a Royal, and once I had three Royals in a 24 hour period.
Unfortunately, there is no way of predicting the outcome of an
idividual play. Just probabilities.
Your post, "am I doomed?" is impossible to answer. You won't know
until you have played a lifetime. If you never ever hit a Royal, then
you are doomed. The probability of that happening is extremely low if
you play a million hands, even lower if you play several millions of
hands, but it is never zero. The mathematics can tell you how low
those probabilities are, but it can't tell you if you will actually
hit a Royal some day. If your play realizes that very low probability
of not hitting a Royal, then, yes, one can say you were doomed.

I play an average of 4000 hands of VP a day (maybe more).
I have done so for the past 16 months. I honeslty don't
know how well I have done in comparison to my overall
expectation, but I have made a significant profit.
The question about 'numbers are not just numbers?' seems
to show that you doubt the numbers. Math is the single
purest truth known to man. I suggest you consult the
archives. This topic has been discussed in great detail
in the past.
