kelly bankroll for JoB

I'm sure Fivespot knows the same thing, but I'm the Fremont Street
Commando. The above rule is mine. And that's just the way I like it--
nice and boring. On some days it's all I can do to get in 4 hours of
play because the boredom puts me to sleep. After about two hours I'm
in the bathroom throwing water in my face. I'm so hooked on caffeine
now, because of pouring down voluminous volume while playing video
poker, that I carry my own coffeemaker in my luggage. When I spring
out of bed I don't have time to get dressed and go down to the lobby or
whatever to get the coffee. I want it now.

I'm bored for one reason. I have no chance of losing on a big edge
play. It's just a matter of production. Production work is
repetitive so it gets boring quickly. However, I do like to create
wealth and live comfortably, so I make myself do it.

I've stuck my hand in the fire a few times and overplayed my bankroll.
I pulled up stakes quickly, taking the loss. There's only so much
excitement I can stand when I'm knocking a big hole in my bankroll.
But's that's how I noticed the excitement and that's how I came up with
the rule.

Many years ago when I was working the poker games at Sandia in
Albuquerque, there was a poker player who knew me and my
circumstances. One day at the table he pointed at me and announced to
the other players "He HAS to win." He's right. I have to win. I have
no other income. But, I ACCEPT the challenge.

If you want to make a living gambling, you better keep it nice and
boring.

Finally a rule that makes sense to me; "Commando's rule-of-thumb"

I would like to add my rule, "Gambling is only fun when betting more
than you can afford to lose."

Happy new year!! Jeep

That's a weak guideline.

It's reasonably on target when it comes to a "session bankroll" or
"trip bankroll" -- the amount a player is prepared to lose over a
given short time frame of play.

However, what might be acceptable (and quite comfortable) in the short
term can prove to be most uncomfortable over the longer term. It's
easy to come to terms with trip to trip volatility through a
rationalization that things will smooth out over the longer term, yet
be missing a realistic expectation of how rough longer term volatility
can run.

Out of a sense that "things must turn around" it's quite conceivable
that a player might ride out a play drought beyond the limits one
originally set ... finding the ultimate outcome quite unacceptable in
hindsight.
