I agree. It should never be 0.Gaffing is intentional, there is also the possibility that a
particular machine is simply slightly defective.
The latter possibility worries me more. I assume I can detect a
gaffed machine that is set to pay back many % lower, but, for all I
know, every machine I've ever played has been inadvertently slightly
defective.
I just have this to say about all that. I have never had a dealt
royal. I've been playing for years, and I'm sure I've played a
million hands. My buddy, who never plays VP, was with his wife in New
Orleans, and to humor her put a twenty in a 3-play quarter machine.
On the second hand he was dealt a royal.
So between my buddy (new name "rat bastard") and me, we're about
average.
I have been playing once a month for 4 years now and never hit a
royal. My first time in a casino was in 1989 and am still waiting for
my royal.

Just to chime in, I am a small player (quarters, 8/5 BP and mostly for
the free beer and cute and/or nice waitresses), but am fairly
stringent about my record keeping. I keep on a daily average of 350
hands per day (I TOLD you "small"), playing more if I need to "catch
up" (didn't play yesterday). I went my first 23 MONTHS without a
royal, but have hit five (including a dealt one) in the past two months.
All I can say is keep playing. I know I thought I'd never get one,
but I guess stats really DO catch up in the long run.
