Best Randomness Analogy Contest

There is no doubt, "Emperor of the north pole" was one of the best movies about the life of a BO. Hollywood has made at least 200 movies that I've seen, where people hop freight trains. Maybe Mickey could tell us Hollywood fiction vs reality on jumping freights and the life of a BO ?

An exchange that started-out as a search for examples of randomness has become a discussion about "Emperor of the North", life on the rails, and reminiscing of events 30 years ago. If that's not random, I don't know what is.

YES, that was it! Now, here's something really scary. I'm thinking of where I was when I saw it, and that puts me at about 20 years old. I'm over 50 now. OMG! I can't believe I am reminiscing about something 30 freaking years ago. I think I'm going to cry, and then go eat some oatmeal.

Ok, you're right, I'm not going to cry. But I am thinking about dying my hair.

No, you are not! You are not going to cry about a man's situation. A man puts himself into the situations's he gets himnslf into. A man lives and dies with the situations he put himself into.

Even though it was 30 years ago, I remember it being a really good movie. I think I'll see if they have it at Blockbuster or something. This discussion has made me want to see it.

I just googled Ernest Borgnine, it says he's still alive, he's 93. Wow!

Was lucky to have the opportunity to meet Ernest about two years ago. He was in Harrisburg PA filming a movie called Another Harvest Moon. He was FULL of life and a joy to be around.
Others in the cast were not so gracious!

Remember ..... life is only what you make it. Never settle for second best.

I didn't think he was still alive, but there he was in the movie "Red," which we just saw when we were in New Orleans.

He was on SNL about 6 months ago. Didn't do more than sit and smile - but I'd settle for that at 93!

Try to find his interview on Fox & Friends last year. He gave away his 'secret' for his longevity to Gretchen Carlson one of the hosts on the show. He whispered it to her & didn't know he was miked. His remark went on the air & so did Gretchen's laughter outburst.
Funny TV moment.

So you got $240 BB in JUST the month of January for $85K coin-in (put in, in one month?)
I'm sorry, but that sounds terrible!

Oops! That message was supposed to go only to the locals group. The coin-in was for the 3-month qualification period for the January mailer - Sept-Nov.

That still makes the old Rio offer of a dollar back per everyone 100 put in for locals last year. That was good stuff.

Mid Contest Notifications and Clarifications:

I'll be closing the contest in 1 week on the 21st to allow enough time to judge all the entries and announce the winner by Feb 3rd on my new Radio Show that I'm co-hosting with Bob Dancer, "Gambling With an Edge".

A couple of posters have pointed out that looking for patterns isn't always bad and I wanted to clarify that I agree with that. I'd love to see an entry that offered examples of valid and invalid searches. Here's mine:

Valid Search: Seeing if the time of year influences the occurrences of storms.

Invalid Search: Seeing if the last digit in the day of the month in our Gregorian Calender influences the occurrences of storms.

One is an attempt to find a pattern in an natural event that very well might not be random. The other is a waste of time, since calendar dates are man made overlays, and one can only hope that Hurricane Harry doesn't know it's Tue the 3rd and choose to strike New Orleans right on Mardi Gras.

I also wanted to clarify what I meant by random as it pertains to video poker. We all no that VP machines use pseudo-random number generators. It is a common misconception that this makes them somehow less random. The opposite is closer to the truth. As long as they aren't malfunctioning or miss-programmed, pseudo-random is as random as you can get, and by that we mean, "Equiprobable & Unpredictable". Everything has an equal chance of occurring and you can't predict it.

I would also like to state that I never said you would not find patterns in random events. Again, the opposite is true. You will almost always find patterns in random events, they simply aren't predictors of the future, which would be the point of looking for them if they were.

Cheers all,

~FK

Hardware random number generators are as random as you can get, pseudo-random number generation is predicatable:

That would be chaotic random. I don't believe slots are chaotic (but perhaps they are), instead they have knowable PDF's that according to the central limit theorem approach a Gaussian distribution.

Toss two fair dice. Everything has an equal chance of occuring and you can't predict it? No, I can predict the follow outcomes:

2 occurs 1 out of 36
3 occurs 2 out of 36
4 occurs 3 out of 36
5 occurs 4 out of 36
6 occurs 5 out of 36
7 occurs 6 out of 36
8 occurs 5 out of 36
9 occurs 4 out of 36
10 occurs 3 out of 36
11 occurs 2 out of 36
12 occurs 1 out of 36

Hi Guys & Gals,

After much thought, I am like 13k emails behind so, be patient, I may answer to something from 2 weeks ago..hehe.

Starting with the page below, is a good place to begin when studying the randomness in VP or anything really. I love to study these things, some may find it boring.
However, for any Career Players, you have probably been down this road of study - already. I just happen to not be a Professional Player as I choose not to be.
Nevertheless, I enjoy gaining knowledge on or about anything that I decide to participate in. This is great for anyone in life - to Learn, always keeping my brain active hopefully, will keep me from hereditary Alzheimers, not withstanding.
